A bill to allow regulation of mixed martial arts in the state of New York has once again stalled out in the State Assembly.

After passing through three separate committees in the Assembly with overwhelming numbers, and getting support from many members of the Assembly, the bill has come to an abrupt halt in the Ways and Means committee.

It's the third straight year the bill has been stopped from getting to a floor vote by the Ways and Means committee, who haven't even put it on the agenda for today's final legislative session according to multiple published reports. The Chair of the Ways and Means committee, Herman Farrell, has been outspoken in his dislike for the sport, saying in a recent interview "I don?t think very much of the sport. Next we?ll give them clubs with spikes on the end; that will be good.?

Though the legislative session could be extended into later this week, the bill would still have to pass both the Ways and Means and the Rules committee before being put to a floor vote, where it's expected to have the votes to pass.

Assemblyman Dean Murray sent a petition to Speaker of the Assembly Sheldon Silver highlighting the support the bill has in the Assembly and urging the bill to the floor for a vote, but that has still not happened. So unless something drastic happens in the next day to get the bill addressed, the fight will have to continue in 2012.

Penick's Analysis: So the saga will continue into 2012. With the amount of votes that this bill was getting in passing through the other committees, and the votes that it clearly had to pass a floor vote in the assembly, it's a damn shame that the reservations of a select few with the power to halt it continue to keep the sport out of the state. It gained more steam this year than in years past, but it's getting to be a ridiculous and seemingly futile enterprise to push this sport into the state. But the UFC will continue their lobbying efforts in the hopes that 2012 will finally bring an end to the banning of the sport in New York state.
