With tough training camp, Strikeforce's Kennedy "sucks" less ahead of Lawler fight

Strikeforce middleweight Tim Kennedy is one of the few fighters you'll hear to say he's happy to go to decision.

Almost a year ago, he went five rounds with the promotion's champion, Ronado "Jacare" Souza. He did not come out ahead on scorecards, and that was obviously not good.

But what it did allow him to do was provide a visual record of what he was doing right and what he was doing wrong, which proved invaluable moving forward.

More changes to UFC 133: Nogueira-Franklin scratched

The UFC's second trip to Philadelphia took another hit over the weekend as Antonio Rogerio Nogueira's shoulder injury forced him to pull off the card. After the UFC already went to the light heavyweight well to find a replacement to fight Rashad Evans in the main event, they were unable to find someone to fight Rich Franklin on such short notice. He was pulled off the card, and Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Vitor Belfort was promoted to the co-main event.

In the space of a week, UFC 133 lost three fighters from the top of the card. The main and co-main events were supposed to settle many questions about the future of the light heavyweight division, but without Phil Davis, Franklin or Nogueira, it will no longer do that.

But the card is far from a dud. It does feature Belfort's first fight since he was kicked in the face by Anderson Silva. The rest of the main card has Jorge Rivera vs. Alessio Sakara, Rory MacDonald vs. Mike Pyle, Brian Ebersole vs. Dennis Hallman, with Alexander Gustafsson vs. Matt Hamill and Chad Mendes vs. Rani Yahya airing on Spike. Is that enough to make you order the pay-per-view or head to a bar to catch the fights?

Daley iceberg-cool heading into Titanic Strikeforce matchup with Woodley

Tyron Woodley's mom told him long ago not to put any stock when people try to bring you down. "A mouth can say anything," is how the saying goes.

A good part of her training has now been put to use for his fight Saturday with Paul Daley, a fighter who's all too happy to throw verbal jabs in addition to those with his fists.

"For me, it's like the Titanic because they've spent a lot of time building him up, and putting him in there with me is kind of unpredictable - because I'm the iceberg," Daley said Thursday of their fight at "Strikeforce and M-1 Global: Fedor vs. Henderson."

England gets UFC 138 in November, fall fight schedule is sick

Did you enjoy the slight lull in the fight schedule during July? Don't get used to it. With the news that UFC 138 was just added to the Zuffa schedule, the fall shapes up as the busiest slate in fighting history.

Gareth A. Davies from The Telegraph broke the story that Chris Leben and Mark Munoz will square off in the main event in Birmingham, England on Nov. 5 at LG Arena.

Marshall Zelaznik, UFC UK vice-president, told The Telegraph yesterday: "I'm very happy to announce UFC 138 will be bringing fireworks to Birmingham on November 5. The last time the UFC was in the second city was UFC 89 in October 2008, and we are very happy to be going back there this bonfire night."

Bloody Elbow also pointed out that Leben vs. Munoz will be the first non-title five round main event. The UFC announced last month that all main events were going to be five rounds.

Davies says no other British fighters have been finalized for the card yet, but he did suggest Brad Pickett (No. 9 in the USA Today/Bloody Elbow MMA rankings) could face Urijah Faber (No. 4) or Miguel Torres (No. 7).

Update: MMAjunkie reports that Pickett has a fight at UFC 138 against Renan Barao. Barao debuted at UFC 130 with a win over Cole Escovedo.

If you like watching MMA events in person then put together a healthy travel budget because starting with Strikeforce 36 on Sept. 10 there is a Zuffa MMA card 9-of-13 weeks. That may turn into 10-of-14 if a card rumored for Dec. 10 lands in Montreal.

There's are also some great boxing matches that'll fill two of the off weeks. Bernard Hopkins battles Chad Dawson on Oct. 15 and Manny Pacquiao returns on Nov. 12 to face Juan Manuel Marquez. The UFC goes head-to-head against Floyd Mayweather on Sept. 17 and the Showtime Super Six Final with Andre Ward against Carl Froch on Oct. 29.

Fall fight schedule:

9/17 - UFN 23 in New Orleans (Floyd Mayweather vs. Victor Ortiz)

9/24 - UFC 135 in Denver

10/1 - UFC on Versus 6 in Washington D.C.

10/8 - UFC 136 in Houston

10/15 - BOXING: Bernard Hopkins vs. Chad Dawson in A.C.

10/29 - UFC 137 in Las Vegas (Andre Ward vs. Carl Froch)

11/5 - UFC 138 on Spike in Birmingham, U.K.

11/12 - Manny Pacquiao vs. Juan Manuel Marquez in Las Vegas

11/19 - UFC 139 in San Jose

12/3 - The Ultimate Fighter 14 Finale in Las Vegas

12/10 - UFC 140 rumored for Montreal

Screenwriter chosen to pen former UFC Champ Rich Franklin's life story in "American Fighter"

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

FranklinRich_150CG_32.jpg
Former UFC Middleweight Champion Rich Franklin's life story has been optioned by Double E Pictures, with a screenplay to be penned by writer and producer David Hollander, according to a press release issued on Wednesday.

"American Fighter" will tell the story of how Franklin rose from a family man and high school teacher to UFC Champion and one of the longer-tenured fighters on the UFC's roster. Eric Eisner, head of Double E Pictures, will produce the film along with Motion Theory's Sean Sorensen, while Mathew Cullen - also of Motion Theory - will serve as executive producer.

"I'm excited to see the story of my career as a fighter brought to the screen, and I feel confident that the team assembled will do a great job in telling this story," Franklin said in the release.

"I'm happy to be in business with Sean and Motion Theory, and look forward to working with David to capture the story of Rich's remarkable life," Eisner said. "This is a truly inspirational story that we are excited to tell."

"Rich's story has that rare combination of qualities that make for a great sports film; human drama, great obstacle and seemingly insurmountable odds," said Hollander. "The fact that all of this is set against the formation of an exploding and dangerous sport and that Rich basically defined what a UFC champion could be make it uniquely interesting to write."

Penick's Analysis: Franklin's story is very interesting, and a film chronicling his path to the top alongside the emergence of MMA as this billion dollar behemoth it has become with the UFC makes for an excellent story. Hopefully Hollander does good work with the script and it can turn into something legitimate and substantial for a Hollywood story. It's certainly a story I'd be interested in watching unfold on the screen.

Working in MMA: Mike Dolce talks about peak performance, Maury and manicures

This week, Cagewriter is taking a look at the different jobs that help the MMA world turn. See part I of the series here.

Today, we look at Mike Dolce, the peak performance coach who is known to help fighters improve their nutrition, and in turn, the way they fight. After working as a strength coach for 20 years and appearing on the seventh season of "The Ultimate Fighter," Dolce has worked with fighters such as Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, Thiago Alves, Chris Leben and Vitor Belfort.

Cagewriter: What is your job like on a day-to-day basis?

Mike Dolce: I'm running multiple training camps from afar. Right now, in Vegas, I'm running Vitor Belfort's training camp and Mike Pyle's. I also have Thiago Alves coming up, and I'm his head coach. I cover so many hats with him, but Vitor and Pyle, I work specifically with their nutrition and weight management issues.

I say more peak performance coach because I do the meals, I do the weights, I do the overall training management. I'm the filter for the other coaches. I set up the training schedule from day to day. I even structure in their business meetings and social function as they get closer to fight time.

CW: Thiago, for example, you set his day?

MD: With Thiago, I literally set up his 24 hours, seven-day a week schedule. Which coach to go to, when he's not allowed to train, because that can be a problem with him, so I have to pull him back a lot. I have to schedule in massage therapy or alternate therapies to make sure he's not going to go to the gym.

On Sundays, I would schedule "Man-Day." He and I would go have a nice breakfast, and then go to a spa. We'd get a haircut, massages, get our feet and hands fixed it, even the random facial. It's important. I incorporate all those things to make sure my fighters are well-rounded.

I try to keep what I call "the positive bubble around fighters" and not let any negativity in. With Mike Pyle, I would get breakfast ready as he watched a fishing show on Versus, but now the Tour de France is on. It broke our rhythm, so instead of watching fishing, he switched to another channel with Maury and the Jerry Springer show. I'm in the kitchen, 20 feet away and I can feel the negative energy come out of the TV. I had to change the channel just to watch something more positive. You can't start your day with that kind of negative mind frame.

CW: What is a fight week like for you?

MD: I try to get to town a day prior to the athlete, then I set up the hotel room and do the food shopping. For Chris Leben, he got into town on Monday night, and before he even got here, I packed a huge cooler with the proper foods that Chris was going to need. I made sure he had everything he was going to need, coordinate with his team, talk about what his weight cut process is going to be. On weigh-in day, I will be with him through the weigh-ins, and then go back to his room for the rehydration process. That carries all the way through to the minute he steps in the cage, performs, and then even afterwards, when I give him the food and fluids that need to go in his body to help him repair and recover from that. My job typically doesn't end until Sunday morning.

CW: What is the best part of your job?

MD: The best part of my job is spreading health. My primary focus is not world titles, and it's not money, or any of those things. It's to make my athletes as healthy as possible. That's the most rewarding part: seeing kids like Thiago Alves, not so much go out there and have a dominant performance, but it's for him to feel so good and be so happy with himself because his body is in a positive state. Performance is just a by-product of that.

CW: But what's the worst part?

MD: I wouldn't point to a worst part and say that it's bad, but the hardest part is dealing with the ups and the downs of the sport. You can work with an athlete, and have a great training camp and he'll go out there on fight night, and something doesn't work. I'm so emotionally attached to my fighters that it's a hard roller coaster. For me, it's multiple times in a single night.

Actually, the worst part is the time away from my family, but it's a choice, but I'm not going to be a victim to it. It's something we've decided over the next few years to do this.

Miesha Tate's Relationship With Boyfriend, Trainer Bryan Caraway, a Winning Match

Miesha Tate demonstrates ground and pound on Bryan Caraway during open workouts.CHICAGO -- "More positives than negatives" is the way Miesha Tate and Bryan Caraway both describe their atypical relationship as a couple who also happen to be professional MMA fighters.

"It's really, really hard to sometimes separate the personal life and the business life of you being her coach, but you know it works out," Caraway told MMA Fighting on Thursday. "She's fighting for a world title and we're still together and haven't killed each other yet," he said with a laugh.

When Tate challenges Marloes Coenen on Saturday for the title of best in the world at 135 pounds in women's MMA, Caraway, who is a cast member on the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter, will serve as her head cornerman for the fight.

So much has transpired since the two first met at Central Washington University less than six years ago. Caraway ran a college MMA club and Tate was a former high school wrestler pushed by her karate-practicing roommate to check out the club.

"I met Miesha when she was a freshman in college, [she] didn't know anything about mixed martial arts," Caraway said. "And I got to see her grow as a person and as a fighter and it's unbelievable to see her as a freshman in college to fighting for a world title now."

On Thursday, in between reiterating her desire for her fight against champion Coenen to be an entertaining war, Tate took the time to also show her appreciation for Caraway.

"Bryan and I have a really unique bond in that we share similar passion," Tate told the media at Harry Caray's. "There's pros and cons with every situation but I definitely think the pros outweigh the cons. He understands the process I'm going through, the weigh-cutting and he's there to support me through the thick and thin."

Despite some "trying" times, at the end of the day Caraway feels they have both benefited through their shared passion and common understanding of the high highs and low lows that come with this demanding sport.

"It definitely is me being the fighter myself understands what she's going through when she's cutting weight for a fight or dieting, the space that she needs, the extra bit of motivation to help her stay on track when she's dieting," he said. "I understand all that, the irritability and stuff. It makes sense for me to step back from the relationship and understand what she's going through and not to take things personally."

Rampage Says He Isn't Old, Confident He Can Take Title

By <a href="mailto:howie@mmanews.com">Chris Howie</a> <Br>
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer<Br><Br>

Quinton Jackson and Jon Jones took part today in the UFC 135 press conference in Denver, Co, which lead to quite a few exchanges between the two top light heavyweight fighters.<Br><Br>

Jackson, feels he has been unfairly group with the old school of fighters despite not being old at all and showed frustration during the conference:<Br><Br>

"Who you calling old, dawg?" said Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson at the UFC 135 press conference.earlier today. " I'm only 33, man. You all act like I'm Randy Couture's old decrepit ass ... goodness. You know, if I gotta represent the old school, then I gotta represent 'em. Hell, ya'll put me in that category, you know?"<Br><Br>

Rampage also commented on his Pride days in comparison to Jon Jones being the youngest UFC Champion:<Br><Br>

"I was younger than him (Jon Jones) when I started in Pride, I was 21, 22, when I was fighting people like Wanderlei, so I guess so, I'm old school. With old school comes experience. He's the youngest champion, but I think he's the least experienced champion in UFC history. All this stuff don't matter to me, I just come to fight, get my belt back. That's the only thing I care about."<Br><Br>

The former UFC Light Heavyweight Champ also discussed his thoughts on their September match up and how he feels it will play out:<Br><Br>

"I see Jon Jones getting destroyed. He's got my belt, man, I want my belt back, man, I ain't playing. All the pressure's on him, I'm in a win-win situation. The last time I was this confident I knocked somebody out in the first round and I got that belt."<Br><Br>

After Loss to Daley, Scott Smith Looking to Avoid Another Knockout

Scott Smith works out for the media before his fight against Saffiedine.CHICAGO -- Getting knocked out is a feeling that Scott Smith had never experienced until he stepped into the cage with Paul Daley in his most recent fight. Getting knocked cold by one of Daley's power punches is a feeling Smith doesn't want to experience again.

"If it happens again, consecutive times, I would be concerned," Smith said Thursday, two days before he returns to the cage for a fight with Tarec Saffiedine. "It's the first time I've been knocked out like that, sparring or anything. I had a TKO loss (against James Irvin in 2004) when I was fighting at heavyweight, but I wasn't out completely like I was against Daley. If it's something that happens again, I get concussions like that, I definitely need to step back and look at what I'm doing."

Concussions and brain injuries are a major issue in other sports, especially football, and Smith says concussions are an issue that need to be addressed in MMA, too. Smith says, however, that the issue goes beyond dramatic one-punch knockouts like he suffered at the hands of Daley: He thinks fighters are at risk in sparring, and they need to be smart about how they train.

"It's a concern," Smith said. "When I first started fighting MMA, my only training was putting the gloves and swinging with boxers. I've learned to start training a lot smarter and not take that kind of abuse."

In fact, Smith says protecting himself against training injuries is more important than avoiding shots like the one he took from Daley, which he views as more of a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence.

"I'm not going to take anything away from Daley, but I just got caught," Smith says of his loss in his last fight. "I can take a shot, I've taken some heavy blows, even in sparring. I think it was just kind of a -- not a lucky punch, but it landed in just the right spot."

The Saffiedine fight is a must-win situation for Smith: After going 0-2 in 2010, he doesn't want his first fight of 2011 to put him on a three-fight losing streak, which could result in him getting cut from Strikeforce. But Smith sounds extremely confident that he's going to put his losing streak behind him.

"He's tough, well rounded all the way around," Smith said of Saffiedine. "But I feel that I can put the fight where I want it. If I want it on the feet I'll keep it there, but if I'm getting it taken to me in the fight I can put it on the ground."

Smith was a popular fan favorite in the UFC in 2006 and 2007, going just 1-3 inside the Octagon but rarely having a dull moment. Now that UFC parent company Zuffa has purchased Strikeforce, it would be easy for Smith to view Strikeforce as a stepping stone back to the UFC. But Smith says he loves Strikeforce as a place for fights that are just a lot of fun, and he hopes it stays that way.

"I don't see the UFC completely taking them over," Smith said. "I think UFC and Strikeforce have two different goals. I think Strikeforce puts on better cards because they put on fights like Fedor vs. Henderson. That doesn't make sense as a title fight but it's a fun fight. It's a fan friendly fight. That's what Strikeforce is good at. They go out there and put on the fights the fans want to see. If Zuffa's smart they keep Strikeforce doing that, whereas the UFC will build up guys to see who's the best fighter in the world."

Smith has had a lot of those fun, fan-friendly fights in his career, including two of the best comeback wins in MMA history, his wins over Pete Sell in 2006 and Cung Le in 2009. He describes those battles as two of his best MMA memories.

"I still get asked about the Cung Le knockout and the fight with Pete Sell," Smith said. "The Cung Le fight I would say was a better comeback. The Pete Sell fight was a better fight. Me and Pete Sell were back and forth, back and forth. It looks like a better comeback because of the way I got caught and then won the fight, but I think the Cung Le fight was such a dramatic comeback because I wasn't winning that fight -- I wasn't even close to winning that fight. The Pete Sell fight was my all-time favorite fight and the Cung Le fight was my greatest comeback."

Now Smith is hoping for a career comeback on Saturday night.

Strikeforce fighter St. Preux once snubbed Bobby Bowden

Ovince St. Preux hits the big stage in Las Vegas tomorrow night at Strikeforce Challengers 17. With 14 pro fights under his belt, he won't be nervous. It doesn't hurt either that he played football in front 100,000-plus during his days in the SEC at Tennessee.

OSP would love to get recruited to the UFC at some point in the future. If offered, it won't be a tough decision. It wasn't as easy when he was a star athlete in high school. All the big guns came after the 6-foot-3, 220-pound linebacker/defensive end prospect.

St. Preux joined ESPNRadio1100's DC and the Sunshine Man on Wednesday to talk about his fighting and football background. He said he chose Tennessee over schools like Miami, Florida State, Notre Dame and Clemson. The decision to turn down Bobby Bowden and FSU was made easier when OSP had a little incident go down at his job.

While St. Preux was working at a Burger King in the Immokalee, Fl. area, his boss got a call asking for the star athlete. The manager asked who was calling and thought it was a prank when the voice on the other end said, "it's Bobby Bowden." The BK boss hung up the phone. That wasn't really the make or break moment in St. Preux's recruitment, but it made for a memorable story. OSP went to have a productive career along sides the likes of Kevin Burnett, Erik Ainge, Robert Peace, Cedric Houston and Gerald Riggs Jr.

Now he wants to be mentioned with names like Jon Jones, Quinton Jackson, Rashad Evans, Mauricio "Rua" Shogun and Lyoto Machida. OSP looks for his seventh straight win tomorrow night against Joe Cason in Las Vegas.

Perhaps the greatest tragedy of mixed martial arts as a sport is that because MMA practitioners are also prizefighters, they are seldom actually appreciated as true martial artists. As sad as it is to imagine, if Bruce Lee - a man widely considered to be the greatest martial artist of all time - were to have ever competed in mixed martial arts, his legacy would likely be defined by his record and whether or not he ever captured a UFC championship as opposed to his commitment to his craft, the diversity of his techniques, and his influence on the world around him.

The fact is, if martial artists the caliber of Anderson Silva, B.J. Penn, Royce Gracie, or Georges St. Pierre existed in a different era, they would likely be mythologized along the same lines as Bruce Lee. However, as fight fans, we all narrow our view of their accomplishments as martial artists in order to rank them and arbitrarily place them on meaningless pound-for-pound lists. Instead of celebrating the career of Anderson Silva, detractors often rush to point out past losses to Ryo Chonan and Daiju Takase in order to tear him down, just so they can build up George St. Pierre. Unfortunately, this leads to St. Pierre's detractors rushing to point out GSP's losses to Matt Hughes, Matt Serra, and his inability to deliver highlight reel knockouts on command (as if those things impeach his accomplishments).

This Saturday night, one of the greatest mixed martial artists ever, Fedor Emelianenko, is competing against another one of the greatest mixed martial artists ever in Dan Henderson. A fight like this should be appreciated for its historical significance, but because of the nature of prizefighting and how it is often viewed by spectators, this fight will either serve as ammunition for Emelianenko's most ardent detractors or as a tool for his supporters to impeach the hard work and preparation of his last two opponents, who were the only two men to ever truly defeat him.

Say what you will of Georges St. Pierre's lack of candor at this point, but when he speaks about the scarcity of true martial artists in MMA, he's passionate, he's honest, and he couldn't be more right. Prizefighting is a line of work that attracts plenty of unsavory types looking to fast make money through fighting, but it also is a platform for some of the greatest martial artists of this era to ply their trade.

Dan Henderson is one of the most accomplished competitors in the history of mixed martial arts, while Fedor is unquestionably the greatest heavyweight we've ever see in MMA. The result of Saturday night's main event between Emelianenko and Henderson in and of itself isn't going to answer any questions about where either man stands as an all-time great. With both men having already secured their legacies, this is simply a fight that fight fans should feel privileged to be able to bare witness to in their lifetimes.

Feel free to follow me on Twitter. @JasonAmadi. Let?s get after it.

Daley says his wrestling deficiency is overplayed

On Saturday night, the last thing Paul Daley wants to be doing is stare at the arena ceiling for much his fight against Tyron Woodley. In the past, he hasn't much say where the fight goes against a former college wrestler like Woodley. Daley and his wrestling Kenny Johnson say his Strikeforce bout this weekend will be different.

Johnson, a former Olympian who wrestled at Iowa, has increased his time spent with the British slugger.

"We started picking up the pace in the last few years and his wrestling has gone through the roof," Johnson said (3:50 mark). "He's really dedicated a lot of time and tried to become a mixed martial artist."

Fight fans' last memory of Daley against an elite former college wrestler was Josh Koscheck at UFC 113. Daley was taken down at will and smothered for 15 minutes. The Brit says forget that fight, Woodley isn't in Koscheck's league.

"He's not as big as Josh Koscheck. He is as athletic, but on the technical side, I don't think he can compete with Josh Koscheck," Daley told USA Today. "People are comparing this to that. People do forget in the Koscheck fight, there are takedowns that I stopped. I think that Josh Koscheck is a higher level than Tyron Woodley, so even if I'm able to stop two of his takedowns or stuff them or stall two of his takedowns back then, I think Tyron Woodley's going to have a very difficult time taking me down when I'm on form, when I'm 100%."

Daley (27-10-2) is fully dedicated to shoring up his weaknesses.

"He (Johnson) lives at my house. He eats with me. So if we're not training, we're talking about wrestling; we're looking at footage. So I think people are going to be very shocked, and I think that's an area where Tyron Woodley is underestimating me, and I think that's going to work in my benefit," said Daley.

The biggest question mark for Woodley (8-0) is his experience. He's never been in the cage with someone so seasoned.

"I'm much bigger. I'm much stronger than he thinks. I'm a lot more experienced than him. I don't think he realizes how that's going to play out in this fight," said Daley.

When talking about future opponents, Daley dropped an interesting nugget during this interview.

"There's a mystery guy. There's a mystery guy that's been signed by Strikeforce that Scott Coker's mentioned, and he said that the winner of this fight could possibly be fighting him immediately for the title. There's lots of speculation; I really have no clue, but I want to be back in a position of fighting for a title," said Daley.

Who could it be?

Jeff Curran signs multi-fight deal with UFC, will make first Octagon appearance in seven years this fall

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

MMATorchAvatar2011V2_180_68.jpg
Jeff Curran is heading back to the UFC for the first time since 2004, as MMAJunkie.com reports that the "Big Frog" has signed a multi-fight deal with the organization.

Curran, cousin of Bellator lightweight tournament winner and summer series featherweight tournament finalist Pat Curran, has competed around the United States in a number of major organizations, as well as an appearance in Pride in Japan and a couple of fights in Canada throughout his 13-year career.

The 33-year-old has appeared once before in the UFC, losing a unanimous decision to Matt Serra back at WEC 46 in January of 2004. Curran would win 15 of his next 16 fights - losing only to Hatsu Hioki by decision in that stretch - but four straight losses in the WEC from 2007-2009 took him out of the spotlight.

Since his split decision loss to Takeya Mizugaki in his final WEC appearance, Curran has won four of his last five fights, and will enter the UFC this fall on a two fight win streak. He's competed in three separate divisions throughout his career, but per the MMAJunkie report he'll be entering the UFC's bantamweight division upon his return.

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: This is good news. Curran is a good fighter who went through a rough stretch in that WEC run. Losses to Urijah Faber, Mike Brown, Joseph Benavidez and Takeya Mizugaki are nothing to scoff at, and actually the Mizugaki fight was a poor decision that really should have gone to Curran in a close fight. He's got a lot of experience and he's capable of defeating a lot of fighters, and he'll be a good addition to the UFC's bantamweight roster.

Marquardt signs with the U.K.?s Bamma

Nate Marquardt isn't waiting around for the UFC to change its mind. The elite middleweight has decided to fight for one of the biggest international promotions, Bamma in England.

Bamma is highly successful promotion in the U.K. The next scheduled card comes in early September. That includes 185-pound title fight with Frank Trigg challenging Tom Watson. Paul Daley has been a big draw in the past as well for Bamma.

Through BAMMA P.R., Marquardt had this to say:

"Offers came in from several fight promotions, but we felt that BAMMA was definitely the best fit. They put on high-quality shows, stack their cards with top-level fighters, and sign those fighters to multi-fight deals. They are also the only fight organization in the UK that implements PED testing," Marquardt said. "To be honest, that is one of the main reasons that we chose BAMMA. I wantto prove to my fans and to the world that I'm the real deal and that I belong on top."

Liam Fisher from Bamma jumped at the chance to sign Marquardt.

"As soon as we received word that the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission lifted Marquardt's suspension we jumped at the chance to sign him. He is a top ranked contender and an asset to any promotion. Words cannot express how excited we are that Marquardt is now fighting under the BAMMA banner," said Fisher.

Marquardt is expected to speak at length about the signing tonight on ESPN's MMA Live.

Marquardt and his management team spoke with U.S.-basedBellator, arguably the No. 1 non-Zuffa owned MMA promotion in the country, but nothing officially materialized.

Bellator was hoping to set up a fight between Marquardt and the promotion's unstoppable champion Hector Lombard. Lombard lashed out again at Marquardt on a local Miami-area radio station.

"He's getting offered more money than me, more money than anybody and he doesn't want to take the fight," Lombard told 790 the Ticket in Miami. "They offered him a one-fight deal. They didn't offer him any contract, a one-fight deal. Way more money than he was making in UFC."

It was previously thought that Marquardt may have turned down the deal because he was asked to enter a Bellator middleweight tournament and work his way up the ladder to get Lombard.

Bellator's First Trip To Canada Proves Highly Entertaining

<B>By MATT MOLGAARD<BR>
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer</B><BR><BR>

Bellator Fighting Championships? first trip to Canada proved to be highly successful, producing a series of excellent (and technically impressive) match-ups. On showcase for the evening were the featherweight semifinals, the promotional debut of Chris Horodecki (18-3) and an intriguing heavyweight clash between former ?The Ultimate Fighter? competitor Zak Jensen (10-7) and heavy handed Bellator veteran, Neil Grove (11-3-1).<BR><BR>

The big boys kicked the evening off with a bang, as Jensen opened the evening?s heavyweight tilt with a staggering left hand that dropped Neil Grove to the canvas, briefly stunning the 6?6? Englishman. Grove however, recovered quickly and soon turned the tides on Jensen. A failed heel hook from Grove led to an entertaining series of punches from both men. The tide would eventually shift in full favor of Grove, who took top control and unleashed a flurry of punches that prompted a referee stoppage just two minutes into the bout.<BR><BR>

The early opener provided enough time to squeeze in one of the events undercard bouts, which saw Alexandre Bezerra (10-1) meet Jesse Gross (6-2) in a 152 pound catchweight clash. Things moved quickly, as Bezerra had his way with Gross, securing a takedown, taking Gross? back, and locking in a rear-naked choke that put Gross to sleep in under 90 seconds.<BR><BR>

IFL and WEC veteran Chris Horodecki was afforded the chance to fight on his home turf, and he made the best of the opportunity. For three rounds ?The Polish Hammer? controlled American challenger, Chris Saunders. Horodecki displayed heavily improved striking defense, and negating virtually every attack Saunders launched. Chris utilized takedowns and top control to chip away at Saunders, racking up big points en route to a decisive 30-27 unanimous decision victory.<BR><BR>

In the evening?s first featherweight semifinal bout, Nazareno Malegarie (20-2) collided with our number nine ranked featherweight, Marlon Sandro (19-2). Malegarie appeared uncomfortable in the fights opening frame, with stiff movement and delayed responses that saw the Brazilian tagged by precision punches by Sandro. In the following two frames, Malegarie seemed to settle down and find his rhythm, though he was never able to secure the upper hand in the fight. Failed takedown attempts by Malegarie provided plenty of chances for Sandro to land heavy, crisp punches and a few nice flying knees. After three rounds of extremely technical pugilism, Sandro was awarded the unanimous decision, making him the evening?s first man to punch his ticket into the featherweight tournament finals.<BR><BR>

Bellator 47?s main event saw former promotional lightweight tournament winner, Pat Curran (15-4) square off with promising Englishman, Ronnie ?Kid Ninja? Mann (20-4-1). Like the Sandro/Malegarie bout, these two engaged in a highly technical duel. Mann appeared comfortable and willing to let his hands and feet go, but Curran?s tight defense enabled him to effectively counter Mann, landing a few flush left hands to the face of Mann.<BR><BR>

Back and forth went this battle, with Mann one step behind Curran for the duration of the bout. A series of flying knees from the Team Curran standout kept Ronnie off balance and guessing, which enabled Pat to dictate the pace and placement of the fight. A few well timed takedowns helped Curran to secure the victory, though ultimately, it was his striking (surprisingly, to some) that played the biggest difference in the fight. In the end, Pat?s precision and constant pressure left little question as to who would advance to meet Sandro in the tournament finals.<BR><BR><!--more-break-->

Between the star power of Horodecki and two extremely compelling featherweight bouts, Bellator 47 was a tremendous success. The event sold out the Casino Rama, and no doubt impressed Canadian mixed martial arts fans, thanks to big fights that delivered in every sense of the word.<BR><BR>
