"American Fighter" will tell the story of how Franklin rose from a family man and high school teacher to UFC Champion and one of the longer-tenured fighters on the UFC's roster. Eric Eisner, head of Double E Pictures, will produce the film along with Motion Theory's Sean Sorensen, while Mathew Cullen - also of Motion Theory - will serve as executive producer.
"I'm excited to see the story of my career as a fighter brought to the screen, and I feel confident that the team assembled will do a great job in telling this story," Franklin said in the release.
"I'm happy to be in business with Sean and Motion Theory, and look forward to working with David to capture the story of Rich's remarkable life," Eisner said. "This is a truly inspirational story that we are excited to tell."
"Rich's story has that rare combination of qualities that make for a great sports film; human drama, great obstacle and seemingly insurmountable odds," said Hollander. "The fact that all of this is set against the formation of an exploding and dangerous sport and that Rich basically defined what a UFC champion could be make it uniquely interesting to write."
Penick's Analysis: Franklin's story is very interesting, and a film chronicling his path to the top alongside the emergence of MMA as this billion dollar behemoth it has become with the UFC makes for an excellent story. Hopefully Hollander does good work with the script and it can turn into something legitimate and substantial for a Hollywood story. It's certainly a story I'd be interested in watching unfold on the screen.
