A vicious head kick does the job as Curran takes featherweight tourney at Bellator 48

Pat Curran stood with one of the most feared knockout artists in the world at 145 pounds and beat Marlon Sandro in the race to land the first fight changing shot. Once he did, Sandro couldn't recover, and Curran took home another $100,000 check and another Bellator tournament title. Curran stopped Sandro with a brilliantly timed head kick to post the victory at the 4:00 mark of the second round at Bellator 48 in Uncasville, Ct.

The 23-year-old Curran has won 7-of-8. His resume of includes wins over Ronnie Mann, Roger Huerta, Toby Imada and Sandro. His only recent loss came via decision at lightweight against Eddie Alvarez, the No. 5 ranked 155-pounder in the world. Along with the big payday, Curran earns himself a future shot at the Bellator featherweight champ Joe Warren.

When it started back in June, Sandro (19-3) was a sizable favorite to win the tournament. The Brazilian entered last night's fight ranked No. 5 at featherweight while Curran (16-4) was way down at No. 19.

It was far from an easy night for Curran. Sandro, 34, was outpacing him and landing the more effective shots on the feet. The first round was close, but Cagewriter gave a slight edge to Sandro. In the second, Curran's output dipped and a Sandro overhand right with 3;30 left ripped open a nasty gash over the American's eye. Curran simply wasn't throwing enough shots to score. When he got a little more active, it quickly changed the direction of the fight.

Curran flicked out a double jab, Sandro ducked to his left to avoid the punches and that's when the American unleashed the head kick. It was perfect. Sandro's momentum took him right into Curran's right shin. Sandro went down in a heap and his arms fell to the side. Curran jumped on top and unloaded three more punches on the defenseless Brazilian. Referee Keith Peterson launched himself through the air to push Curran away and save Sandro.

Shogun Rua Back In Title Mix With Win Over Forrest Griffin

By <a href="mailto:howie@mmanews.com">Chris Howie</a> <Br>
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer<Br><Br>

After losing the UFC Light Heavyweight Title to Jon Jones in March, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua showed he still is a contender after convincingly stopping Forrest Griffin this past weekend at UFC 134 in Brazil.<Br><Br>

Post fight he <a href=http://www.mmajunkie.com>spoke</a> about where he feels he stands in the current title picture:

"I've only had five losses," Rua said in his native Portuguese. "I've managed to avenge all of them except Jon Jones and Babalu. Babalu is my friend, and he's on my team, so I wouldn't think of doing that. The only guy left then is Jon Jones."<br><Br>

Jones has a date with Quinton Jackson in September when he defends the title for the first time since taking it from Shogun. Rua believes with one more impressive performance he could earn a shot at whoever the champ is.<Br><Br>

The main man in charge, Dana White, gave his thoughts on Rua as well:<Br><Br>

"[That] was a big win for him," UFC President Dana White said. "The guy just lost the title to Jon Jones ... I've got Jon Jones ranked No. 3 pound-for-pound in the world. (He) beats Forrest Griffin, who's one of the top light heavyweights in the world. It put Shogun right back in the title hunt."<br><Br>

QUOTABLES: Brendan Schaub fighting for respect, wants title shot or Brock Lesnar next should he defeat Antonio Minotauro Nogueira at UFC 134

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

BrendanSchaub_180.jpg
"I think I?m up to the challenge [of Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira]. It doesn?t get much bigger than this. No doubt it?s the biggest fight of my life on the biggest stage. I think UFC Brazil is the biggest card of the year -- that?s why I asked to be on it. Nogueira?s regarded as one of the greatest heavyweights of all time. To fight him in his own back yard, it?s something no one?s ever done... It?s tough to get the credit I deserve... I?m earning respect as a top-10 heavyweight in the world. I see some rankings where I?m top-10, and some where I?m not. I get it; I?ve got some work to do. This fight will make a big statement... I?ve never grown so much in a camp as I have in this camp for Nogueira. Not even close. I was just a sponge. The thing I know now is that I?ve got a long way to go, man! I can get so much better, and to me that?s so cool... I think I match up very well with [Junior] dos Santos or Cain Velasquez. I would love to fight the winner of that [after this fight]. But I hear Brock Lesnar is healthy, and I would love to see how I match up with a guy like that as well. From here, there?s not many fights left -- only a couple of guys."

-Brendan Schaub talks to ESPN.com about the challenge of fighting Antonio Minotauro Nogueira in Brazil at UFC 134 this weekend, battling for respect and wanting a big fight after this event.

Penick's Analysis: I'll say this, if Schaub beats Nogueira and isn't the one who gets the nod for the next title shot, I'd love to see a fight between him and Brock Lesnar. That would be a more interesting fight for Lesnar to me than the rumored third matchup with Frank Mir, though below a potential fight with Alistair Overeem if the Dutch striker comes to terms with the UFC. Still, Schaub would be a viable option if he defeats Nogueira, and I'd be very excited to see that matchup.

UFC 134 openers: Alcantara and Jabouin victorious in Rio

The first of 14 Brazilians to appear on the card tonight at UFC 134 in Rio de Janeiro put on a good scrap. The elder of the two, Yuri Alcantara showed a little more poise and scored well in each round to roll to a unanimous decision victory, 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28, over Felipe Arantes at UFC 134 in Brazil.

Technically, this was Alcantara's UFC debut, but he already has a Zuffa win under his belt from WEC 53 where he destroyed Ricardo Lamas via first-round knockout. His gameplan wasn't too tricky tonight. Arantes didn't possess the takedown defense to stay off his back. Alcantara (25-3, 1-0 UFC) scored five takedowns. He spent most of the time trying to improve position. Alcantara did land a nasty elbow in the second that opened a small cut around Arantes' right eye.

Alcantara also threatened for a rear-naked choke early in the third, but gave up the position seconds later when he failed to secure Arantes' lower half. Alcantara is reportedly a jiu-jitsu black belt, but appeared sloppy on most occasions when threatened for a submission or got the mount. Give him credit though, getting to those positions is impressive in itself.

Jabouin gets first UFC win

Jabouin made a successful debut at 135 pounds tonight. His kicking game was too much for Ian Loveland to handle. Jabouin landed most of the significant shots in the fight and took a split decision victory, 29-28 on two cards and 27-30 on the other.

Jabouin was particularly effective using the spinning back kick. He crushed any hopes of Loveland getting the win by also exhibiting good takedown defense.

Loveland's lost two straight. He's 1-2 with the UFC. Jabouin is 16-7 and now 2-3 with Zuffa promotions.

Tavares hooks Fisher with a TKO at UFC 134

Thiago Tavares continued the Brazilian win streak going at UFC 134 with a TKO of Spencer Fisher in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday night.

Tavares worked Fisher against the cage for most of the first round, controlling Fisher and keeping him from landing any significant strikes. Tavares followed the same gameplan in the second round, but was more aggressive. He was able to take Fisher's back, and then transition to full mount. He let strikes rain down on Fisher's head until the bout was stopped 2:51 into the second round.

Afterwards, he jumped on the fence and waved a Brazilian flag as the raucous crowd chanted, "Thiago!" It was clearly a special moment for the fighter born and raised in Brazil.

Strikeforce is returning to HDNet this September with a preliminary card broadcast from the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix Semifinals, the two sides announced on Tuesday.

Additionally, the network will broadcast prelims live from the Heavyweight Grand Prix Finals event at a to-be-determined date and location, as well as the weigh-ins for both events.

The four fights currently scheduled for broadcast are Mike Kyle vs. Marcos Rogerio de Lima, Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante vs. Yoel Romero, Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos vs. Jordan Mein and Amanda Nunes vs. Alexis Davis. One additional fight is also being planned.

"As we continue to showcase some of the sport's up-and-coming talent on our prelims, we're excited to be able to air them live on HDNet," Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said. "We're excited to give Strikeforce fans even more access to great fights."

UFC reportedly targeting Anderson Silva vs. Dan Henderson rematch for Fox debut on Nov. 12, Lorenzo Fertitta says "I would love to do that"

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Anderson_Silva_UFC_still_180_38.jpg
UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta and UFC President Dana White have both stated in recent interviews that they are awaiting the results from this Saturday's UFC 134 event before determining what they'll do in the main event of their Fox debut in November. There appears to be good reason for that, as signs are pointing to Anderson Silva's involvement in the UFC's network television debut.

Tatame.com reported on Tuesday that the UFC is targeting a Middleweight Championship fight between Silva and a returning Dan Henderson for the Fox card, with the caveat that Chael Sonnen could be put into that slot if Henderson would not move to middleweight.

Henderson posted a comment on Twitter that seemed to hint at that possibility, responding to a post from Jay Glazer about the UFC on Fox deal by saying, "Stoked too, Jay. This could work out well for both of us. Lol."

In addition to the report and Henderson's comment, Tatame got a follow-up response from Fertitta. Though he was non-committal in the response, saying simply they were going to bring a big fight for that event, he did have a positive reaction to the prospects of that fight.

"I would love to do that," said Fertitta. "Anderson just needs a win."

Should Silva come out of Saturday's event with a win over Yushin Okami and without much in the way of injuries, a rematch with Henderson could be a very big fight for the Fox debut. They first met at UFC 82 in 2008 in a Pride vs. UFC unification bout, where Silva defeated Henderson by submission in the second round.

If the fight happens, Henderson will make his first UFC appearance since July of 2009, while Silva would look for his 15th straight win in the UFC.

Penick's Analysis: I don't like this as a middleweight fight, but if it was booked at light heavyweight I might change my tune. Henderson simply hasn't performed as well in recent years at 185 lbs. as he has at 205 lbs., and I think he'd be a more dangerous matchup if he was more comfortable and not forced to cut that extra weight. That said, this is still far from set in stone, and nothing is going to be confirmed at this point in time. One issue with the original report is the belief that Sonnen would be a part of the fight on Fox. Seeing as that event is taking place in Anaheim, Calif., I wouldn't expect Sonnen to be anywhere near that card after his issues with the California State Athletic Commission. If this fight gets booked, it could definitely be a very big draw for the UFC on network television, and they'd be able to use their "best fighter in the world" moniker to sell Silva to the masses. But if any of this is going to come to pass, Silva has to take care of things against Okami in Brazil this Saturday.

Belfort, Anderson and more: the state of MMA in Brazil today

It's been nearly 13 years since the UFC last visited Brazil, the cradle of the sport. At UFC: Brazil, held October 10, 1998 in Sao Paulo, Vitor Belfort TKOed Wanderlei Silva, in Belfort's first fight at 205 lbs. and Silva's UFC debut. Frank Shamrock submitted John Lober in the main event to defend the UFC middleweight belt, and Pedro Rizzo and Pat Miletich both walked away with wins.

Since then, the UFC has changed just a bit. The UFC was purchased by the Fertitta brothers and Dana White, a reality show widened its reach, and the sponsors upgraded from Mickey's Malt Liquor to Budweiser. Through it all, Brazil's crucial role as the birthplace of great fighters has not changed. From Royce Gracie to Anderson Silva, many of the UFC's best call Brazil home.

This Saturday at UFC 134, the UFC finally returns. What should American MMA fans know about the sport in Brazil these days? Fernando Zanchetta, the MMA blogger for Yahoo! Sports Brazil, answered Cagewriter's questions.

Cagewriter: What is the biggest sport in Brazil?
Fernando Zanchetta: Soccer continues as the biggest sport in the country, and this will not change anytime soon. The sport is an integral part of Brazilian culture with a huge advantage over all others. Second, currently, I'd say it's volleyball, especially after the results in the Olympic Games. The country has many sports other sports it goes crazy about, too, as happened with tennis and F1, but depends only on a few stars.

MMA in Brazil still suffers a lot of prejudice. But I can say that the amount of good fighters has increased gradually, and that it has potential to follow closely the other two (soccer and volleyball).

CW: Who is Brazil's most popular fighter?
FZ: Vitor Belfort (pictured) is still the most popular of the mainstream public. He's fighting since he was 19, married a supermodel (Joana Prado) and participated in a very successful reality show at the beginning of the decade.

Last year, Anderson Silva won many fans, signed important contracts with major brands and learned how to deal better with the press. The knockout against Belfort had a great impact to the world of combat sports in the country. This will increase absurdly after UFC 134, which will be the first broadcast on open television channel in Brazil.

CW: Is MMA big in certain cities, or all over the country?

FZ: The headquarters is still Rio de Janeiro. That's where most folks want to go to evolve technically. Curitiba no longer has the same force like it did at the beginning of the decade, but follows behind Rio. Sao Paulo is the largest city, but still has only a few fighters with international fame (like Demian Maia and Luiz Cane).

The north of Brazil also brings good surprises and becomes well known as a center of hard fighting at Belm do Par and Natal, land of brothers Patrick and Patricky Freire.

CW: Are fighters still learning from luta livre or just jiu-jitsu?
FZ: Luta livre haven't developed as much as jiu-jitsu, which was the major export product of its kind in the 1990s. Today is just a sport restricted to Rio and some gyms outside Brazil. Jiu-jitsu evolution continues around the world.

CW: Are there any young stars that MMA fans should watch for?
FZ: Erick Silva, Freire brothers, Marcelo Magro, John Lineker, and Francisco Massaranduba are among the best to watch.

CW: What else should American MMA fans know about MMA in Brazil?

FZ: Brazil is the birthplace of the sport and it will never change. But there are still remnants of the time when the Vale Tudo was marginalized by the media and society. Now people seem to understand that MMA is a professional sport. There are more specialized media and people are more interested in fights, fighters and all stuff related to it. The new generation of fighters are beginning to take their first -- and good -- steps too.

Obrigado to Fernando for his time. Read Casca Grossa, the Brazilian Yahoo! Sports MMA blog.

Dana White interview: UFC president not seeing title rematches for Belfort or Fitch anytime soon

Dana White understands the desires of both Jon Fitch and Vitor Belfort to get back in the Octagon for a shot at UFC titles, but he's also got a promotion to run. Joining ESPNRadio1100/98.9 FM's "The MMA Insiders" show on Friday, White said it's a tough to sell Jon Fitch against Georges St-Pierre again. The same goes for Belfort against UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva.

Belfort doesn't believe that's the case. He wants the title shot and say Silva is afraid of him.

"If he didn't throw that kick, this would've happened to him. He knows that," Belfort said during the UFC 133 postfight press conference. "I would like to fight the winner of [Yushin] Okami and Anderson [at UFC 134]."

White was shocked by Belfort's words.

"Craziest statement ever made. 'Listen, if he didn't knock me out I would've won that fight!' Yeah, okay. Maybe," laughed White (8:25 mark).

That said, White is an admirer of Belfort. He just wants to see more consistency out of the veteran.

"The problem with a guy like Vitor Belfort is he's one of the best in the world [but] Vitor is just inconsistent," White said. "[...] Vitor Belfort needs to get into a consistent game where every fight looks like the Akiyama fight. Even if he goes in against a guy and it's an absolute war, at least Vitor Belfort went in and let his hands go."

Belfort has a lot of work to get done before he gets in there again with Silva.

"Vitor Belfort went in against Anderson Silva and got hit with a front kick and got knocked out in the first 30 seconds of the fight. Who does he gotta to beat and how long's he gotta go before you want to see him fight Anderson Silva again? Maybe a couple of Akiyama type knockouts and maybe we are ready to see him face Anderson again," White said.

Spend 6 seconds watching Pat Barry?s flying takedown

In preparing for his UFC on Versus 6 bout with Stefan Struve, Pat Barry has to prepare for a bit of a height difference. Struve, nicknamed "Skyscraper," is a foot taller than Barry, and will have an eight-inch reach advantage. With that much of a deficit, Barry has to come up with some unconventional training methods.

Tickets for their card in D.C. at the Verizon Center, which will be headlined by Dominick Cruz's title defense against Demetrious Johnson, will go on sale Wednesday for UFC Fight Club members, and the general public on Friday.

Lightweight newcomers John Cholish and Mitch Clarke meet at UFC 140 in Toronto

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

MMATorchAvatar2011V2_180_92.jpg
Two UFC newcomers are on their way to Toronto this December, as multiple published reports state that lightweight prospects John Cholish and Mitch Clarke will square off at UFC 140.

The event marks the second trip to Toronto for the UFC in 2011. After debuting with a record-breaking card from the Rogers Centre in April at UFC 129, this event will be scaled back to their normal capacity for events at the Canadian city's Air Canada Center.

Cholish brings a 7-1 record into his UFC debut. The New Jersey native lost his first career fight in 2007, but has gone unbeaten since then, including picking up a very impressive kneebar win over Ultimate Fighter alum Marc Stevens at Strikeforce "Fedor vs. Silva" in February. He followed that up with a submission win over WEC-vet Jameel Massouh, keeping his streak of stoppage victories intact at six.

Canadian lightweight Clarke has won all nine of his fights since beginning his career in 2007. He's gone to the judges in only two of his fights, and boasts five submission victories of his own.

Penick's Analysis: This sounds like a very solid preliminary card matchup between these two newcomers. Cholish has pulled off a couple of submission wins in a row over recognizable names, and while Cholish doesn't have the names under his belt he's still been winning fights. Both will be out to make a big impression to UFC brass in Toronto, so I'd expect a good showing from each in this fight.

Aaron Rosa drops to light heavyweight, meets Fabio Maldonado at UFC on Versus 6 in October

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

MMATorchAvatar2011V2_180_90.jpg
After losing his UFC debut in a heavyweight fight in June, Aaron Rosa will drop the light heavyweight division, and will take on Fabio Maldonado at UFC on Versus 6 on October 1.

The UFC announced the 205 lb. fight on Wednesday morning.

Rosa entered the UFC on a four fight win streak and a 16-3 record overall. However, after defeating Abe Wagner in a Titan Fighting Championships event in March, Rosa was taken out by Joey Beltran in his debut fight. The back and forth fight between the two was a very entertaining bout, though, and Rosa gets another fun matchup with Maldonado.

After defeating James McSweeney in his UFC debut, Maldonado took on Kyle Kingsbury in a closely contested fight at The Ultimate Fighter Finale in June. The Brazilian put forth a good effort, brutalizing Kingsbury's body with knees and punches throughout the three round fight, but ultimately he was edged out in the decision, losing for only the fourth time in his career.

UFC on Versus 6 takes place from the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C., headlined by a Bantamweight Championship fight between Dominick Cruz and Demetrious "Mighty Mouse" Johnson.

Penick's Analysis: This is an interesting matchup at 205 lbs. Rosa's not going to be a small light heavyweight, and Maldonado looked like he should move to the middleweight division down the line. There will be a significant size disparity in this fight, but that doesn't mean Maldonado doesn't have plenty to offer Rosa in the matchup. This should be a fun preliminary card scrap between these two, and it's a good fight for both to see where they'll go next.

QUOTABLES: Dan Henderson thinks Rashad Evans should wait for title shot so UFC can book "Champion vs. Champion" fight

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

HendersonDan_150_51.jpg
I'm ready to fight, and I think I'm a valuable asset to make some money with also, and they know that. I'm not worried about what's going to happen. I'd like to try and fight in December. Take another month off or so and get back to training... It will probably come down to money, but it's coming from the same people, so it's a matter of where they're going to make the most money off of me as well, and to be able to pay what I'm getting paid, they need to be making money as well... I think the biggest fight they could promote is probably a title unification with whoever is the champ in the UFC. I think for them to utilize the best potential to make money for everybody, I think they'd have to have Rashad [Evans] wait it out one more fight."

-Dan Henderson talks to MMAWeekly.com about what he's looking for from the UFC, including his belief that Rashad Evans should wait for his title shot so the UFC can book a "Champion vs. Champion" fight.

Penick's Analysis: There is one way the UFC puts a champion vs. champion fight over Evans, and that's if "Rampage" Jackson defeats Jon Jones in September. If that happens, and they want to play it that way, they could book Evans vs. Jones in their grudge match, and a rematch between Henderson and Rampage. However, if Jones beats "Rampage," there isn't a chance the UFC even considers putting Henderson against Jones over Evans. Henderson deserves a high profile fight, but I think it's going to have to be against another top contender in order to get a title shot.

Mauricio "Shogun" Rua's manager refutes rumors of a knee injury forcing Rua out of UFC 134

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Shogun_Rua_180_4.jpeg
The UFC's return to Brazil for the first time since 1998 comes next Saturday night with UFC 134, but on Wednesday there was a bit of a scare that the event may be losing its co-main event.

Rumors began around Brazilian forums and spread to Twitter and Facebook that Mauricio "Shogun" Rua had re-injured his knee and would be out of his bout with Forrest Griffin on the card. However, Tatame.com has now reported quotes from Rua's manager squashing those rumors.

"His knee is absolutely perfect, there's no injury," said Rua's manager Eduardo Alonso. "I don't know where people take that from. He's training hard, following the training scheduled with Rafael Cordeiro, Renato Babalu [Sobral] and all the team... He's very excited [for] this fight."

With that assurance, fans can breathe a sigh of relief and get back to anticipating next week's card from Rio de Janeiro.

Link to Original Source Article

Penick's Analysis: I hope it's not a smoke screen comment from Alonso, but I don't think it is. If "Shogun" had injured his knee again, it may have marked the end of his career, and that's not something anyone would have wanted to see. I love this rematch between Rua and Griffin, and can't wait to see it, so hopefully he stays healthy throughout this next week and those rumors were indeed just rumors.

?Cowboy? Cerrone shows striking prowess at UFC on Versus 5

MILWAUKEE -- Donald Cerrone showed off his kickboxing prowess in a TKO over Charles Oliveira on Sunday night at the UFC on Versus 5 card.

Cerrone controlled most of the fight, stalking down Oliveira with leg kicks and punches. He knocked Oliveira down with a knee, and then backed away for a second before finishing up with a flurry of punches. It was stopped at 3:01 in the first round.

"My game plan was to let it go man. I finally got to go out there and get it started. Looking forward, I would like a rematch with Ben Henderson. I train with the best every day, and this is what you get," Cerrone said after the win.

This win puts Cerrone on a five-fight win streak, extending back to his stint in the WEC. Oliveira is a young, rising prospect, but has hit a rough patch as his last three fights were two losses and a no contest.

Manny Gamburyan suffers shoulder injury, out of UFC 135 bout with Diego Nunes

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

MMATorchAvatar2011V2_180_88.jpg
UFC featherweight Manny Gamburyan has suffered a shoulder injury and is out of his bout with Diego Nunes on next month's UFC 135 card.

The 30-year-old revealed his injury and removal from the card in a post on Twitter.

"I'm [out of] the UFC 135 card I hurt my shoulder and MRI is not looking good," Gamburyan wrote. "I just wanna say sorry to... my friends and fans I'll [be] back!"

The bout was to be Gamburyan's second fight since returning to the UFC with the absorption of the WEC. The former lightweight has lost two fights in a row, including his return bout against Tyson Griffin in June.

Nunes is now without an opponent for the moment as he looks to rebound from a loss in his last fight himself. After defeating Mike Brown in his UFC debut in January, Nunes was defeated by Kenny Floriain in his last fight in June at UFC 131.

UFC 135 takes place on Sept. 24 from the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colo., headlined by a Light Heavyweight Championship bout between Jon Jones and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson.

Penick's Analysis: That would have been a good fight, so it's an unfortunate loss to the card. Nunes will likely still be on the card, as they've got time to find him a replacement, but for Gamburyan it's a definite setback. Shoulder injuries can be seriously detrimental and hard to come back from, so for his sake hopefully it won't be that major of an injury.
