WWE SmackDown! Taping Draws 1,600 Paying Customers
Following the event’s poor advance, WWE only sold tickets facing the camera so the Huntington Center would appear full on television. SLAM! Wrestling columnist Matt Bishop, who attended the event, described the venue’s appearance: “Tuesday’s tapings of WWE Smackdown, Superstars and NXT wasn’t notable because of what happened in the ring, but rather because of what was happening outside the ringside area. Or more appropriately, ...

UFC 137 openers: Nijem, Carmont and Starks are early winners
LAS VEGAS -Ramsey Nijem got caught at the Season 13 "Ultimate Fighter Finale." It happens, but that didn't take away from his status as a solid lightweight prospect.
He rebounded tonight to toy with Danny Downes on his way to a unanimous decision victory, 30-25, 30-26 and 30-27 in bout No. 3 at UFC 137 in the Mandalay Bay Events Center.
Nijem landed pretty much everything he threw on the feet which led to control in the clinch. He scores seven takedowns and each time took Downes' back. Nijem worked 10-plus chokes throughout. Downes didn't provide much opposition overall, but he is nearly impossible to finish. Downes had the snot beat out of him against Jeremy Stephens at that TUF 13 Finale, but wouldn't give up.
[Related: UFC 137: Penn, 'Cro Cop' set to retire after losses]
Nijem was a bit impatient on most of his choke attempts. He tried many of them without securing Downes' body. Although he did secure a body lock late and Downes still wouldn't give up.
Vera escapes the third round to break losing streak
Brandon Vera is hanging on by a thread. He survived a difficult third round against Eliot Marshall to post a unanimous decision victory, 29-28 on all three cards, in the fourth bout at UFC 137.
Brandon Vera escaped the chopping block earlier this year when it was discovered that Thiago Silva had submitted a false urine sample. Vera was actually released from his contract, but then brought back when the Nevada State Athletic Commission settled the Silva case and put him on suspension.
Carmont rolls past one-dimensional Camozzi
Chris Camozzi's return to the UFC wasn't what he hoped for at UFC 137. An alum of Season 11 of "The Ultimate Fighter," Camozzi was outclassed by Francis Carmont. The Canadian beat up Camozzi on the feet and posted a dominant second round on his way to a unanimous decision victory, 30-26, 30-27, 30-27, in bout No. 2 of the night at UFC 137.
Carmont had to fight off a persistent Camozzi along the cage for most of the first and the beginning of the second. He changed the tone of the fight by landing a pair of flying knees with 2:15 left in the second. Carmont then executed a beautiful slam of Camozzi. With less than 25 seconds left in the round, Carmont landed a big uppercut followed by a left hook that floored Camozzi.
Starks win debut over fellow UFC rookie Jacoby
Clifford Starks came away with the win in his UFC intro, but it was hard to tell what sort of prospect the former Arizona State wrestler will turn out to be. Starks use his grappling skills to score takedowns in each round and rolled to a unanimous decision victory, 30-27 on all three cards.
Starks (8-0) has been fighting since 2009 and still has some work to do on his hands. His most effective punch was a right hand lead, but he looked uncomfortable throwing the jab. Jacoby (6-1) is still a mystery.
Starks deserves some major credit for taking this fight on just eight days notice.

Party on Halloween with Sonnen, Silva expected to dress as a ?duck or chicken?
Chael Sonnen is doing everything he can to get that rematch against Anderson Silva, so he'll be front and center in Las Vegas this weekend around UFC 137. That includes hosting a Halloween party at XS, one of Sin City's hottest clubs.
This comes on the heels of Sonnen hijacking ESPN's MMA Live to further promote his cause. The middleweight contender asked hosts Jon Anik and Kenny Florian what they thought Silva would dress as for Halloween.
"A or B: Will Anderson Silva go as a duck for Halloween or will he dress as a chicken? I'm gonna go B, I think he goes as chicken, he already has the costume," said Sonnen.
He also made an interesting point about Silva's manager Ed Soares.
"Apparently the Ed Soares excuse factory is open for business. A champion doesn't call somebody out. If you're the champion, you get called out. I think it's a little odd and unprecedented that Anderson Silva is now trying to pick a fight," Sonnen said. "He's doing the same thing I am, he's calling out Michael Bisping because it's an easy fight. Well, I want an easy fight too, which is why I'm calling him out, so I get it."

Monday morning(ish) KO: Kimbo Slice?s boxing win
Though most of the boxing world was focused on Bernard Hopkins this weekend, former UFC heavyweight Kimbo Slice had his second boxing match this weekend. It didn't take long.
In just 47 seconds, he took out Tay Bledsoe, a tall cruiserweight whose record is now 2-4. With two wins now under his belt in the ring, is Slice a full-fledged boxer, or is he still a former mixed martial artist who is now trying boxing? Tell us in the comments or on Facebook.

As MMA continues global growth, veteran manager Alex Davis warns of ego's ugly side
And while Davis believes there are still plenty of opportunities for growth in the sport, he's also bothered by a growing enemy within the sport: ego.
"Time and time again, I find myself staring ego in the face," Davis recently told MMAjunkie.com. "A lot of money has been spent, events have been created, fights have been accepted, enemies have been made and big decisions taken - all based on ego."

B.J. Penn open to five round bout with Nick Diaz at UFC 137, says UFC hasn't approached him about it yet
On Wednesday, Penn responded during a conference call for the event, and said he'd be more than willing to go five rounds with Diaz. However, he said that it's a job for him and he'd like to be paid accordingly for making that change. Penn also said he had not gotten a call from the UFC or Dana White or anyone about changing the fight to a five round bout, so as far as he knows the fight is still as originally scheduled.

Georges St. Pierre is hoping for a Super Bowl weekend return
When Georges St. Pierre realized that his knee was too injured for him to fight at UFC 137, he was shaken up. He admitted that he let some emotion show when he had to pull out of the bout with Carlos Condit.
"I'm not going to lie, I cried yesterday," St-Pierre told SportsNets. "I had a ton of pressure falling off my shoulders, because for the last few days I was in the mindset that I was nervous for the fight. I was excited for the fight but I was also nervous to know if I was going to be able to fight."
He sprained his MCL while training on Tuesday afternoon. Though it was an injury serious enough to pull him from the fight, it won't keep him out for too long. He is hoping to be able to fight on the UFC's Super Bowl weekend card, normally one of the bigger events on their calendar.
"I would say maybe end of January, possibly the beginning of February [for my return]?Super Bowl, around this time," St-Pierre said.
Condit told Cagewriter that he was hoping to fight GSP for the belt by the end of the year, but with GSP's timetable, Condit will have to wait a bit longer.

Aldo has much to prove before he?s mentioned with the elite
HOUSTON - Featherweight champ Jose Aldo was an unstoppable force on his way up through the WEC. Now that Aldo has arrived in the UFC, and he isn't running through opponents anymore, you have to ask - did many in the media and some fans push Aldo into MMA's top five pound-for-pound rankings too quickly? It looks like it.
With the addition of new fighters from around the world and some former lightweights dropping down to featherweight, Aldo (20-1-1, 2-0 UFC) has a lot to get done before he should be legitimately mentioned amongst the elite of the elite.
"No way (has he cleaned out the division). That's why when they talk about him being top three pound-for-pound ... it's like, he's got a lot of work to do," Dana White said.
Kenny Florian made that obvious on Saturday night. Aldo was far from his super-aggressive self. He won the fight, but Florian made him battle for 25 minutes to get a unanimous decision, 49-46 on all three cards. Yahoo! Sports' lead MMA Writer Kevin Iole actually scored the fight 48-47 for Florian. Several others along press row in Houston had it 48-47 for Aldo.
"When you get into a fight with a guy like Kenny, a big, strong guy who's pushing you against the cage, you're in there trying to get out. It's one thing if you're in there going guns-a-blazing like when Urijah Faber and Aldo fought ... they went at it. That's not what you saw tonight," said Dana White, sounding less than impressed.
Aldo admitted that he fought with a conservative approach.
"I had to pace it a little bit in this fight. I knew if I was too explosive that Kenny could end up beating me. So I had to pace it. I couldn't really be as explosive as I wanted to be. And everybody was kind of telling me to hold back so I just kept it cool and studied the fight," Aldo said, not looking overly pleased with the W.
The champ defended take down attempts extremely well, thwarting 19-of-20 tries (Compustrike said it was 12-of-14) from Florian. But the Brazilian's lethal kicking game never got going and according to FightMetric, he was actually outlanded 69-66 over the course of five rounds. Those are hardly the numbers you'd expect from a guy being mentioned with the likes of Anderson Silva and Georges St-Pierre.
On top of that, Aldo (20-1-1, 2-0 UFC) wasn't exactly facing a young gun or a guy on the upswing. Frankly, Florian is probably on the other side as far his career goes. He spends an awful lot of time with his side gig, as a television analyst with ESPN and he's now 35 years old. Following the loss, there were even rumors swirling that he was going to announce his retirement.
At UFC 129, Mark Hominick was beat up early against Aldo, but came on strong later in the fight to take the champ the distance as well. There were also moments where Hominick clearly outstruck the champ.
A closer examination of Aldo's previous victims in the WEC and you start to question the quality of his victories. He took the WEC title from Mike Brown in 2009. Brown is just 3-3 since.
Faber lost Aldo as well at 145, but now he's down at 135, his natural weight. Aldo's victories before that were against pretty non-descript fighters in the WEC.
This isn't a hatchet job on Aldo, but he is just 25 years old and needs to accomplish a lot to reach GSP and Silva heights. St-Pierre has won nine straight fights since 2007. Over that time, he's also won roughly 34-of-36 rounds. Silva's been even more impressive with 15 straight wins, 13 of them via some sort of finish.
Aldo's going to get Chad Mendes next and then a whole new wave of contenders from inside and otuside the promotion. Maybe these two decision victories will launch him to new level of dedication and Aldo can legitimately take the pound-for-pound crown from GSP and Silva, just give him a few years.

In a surprising battle of takedowns, Pettis outlasts Stephens at UFC 136
HOUSTON - Jeremy Stephens and Anthony Pettis are dangerous on the feet so it was expected that the young lightweights would produce something spectacular. It never happened.
Stephens turned to wrestling in the first and Pettis (14-2, 1-1 UFC) reacted by using his grappling to grind out the next two rounds. It worked. He got a split decision victory, 29-28, 28-29 and 29-28, in the UFC 136 opener on Spike.
This was a huge fight for Pettis, who was expected to challenge for the UFC lightweight title in 2012. He won the WEC 155-pound title to close out 2011, which was supposed to earn him a shot against the winner of the Frank Edgar-Gray Maynard fight in January.
Unfortunately for Pettis, the champ and challenger fought to a draw at UFC 125. Dana White decided that it was only fair for the Edgar and Maynard to fight again, so Pettis took a fight instead of waiting. He lost that June fight against Clay Guida, and was facing a massive tumble down the lightweight ladder if he lost to Stephens tonight.
The first round didn't go well for Pettis. Stephens (20-7, 7-6 UFC) shocked him by grappling in the middle of the round and eventually scoring two takedowns.
In the second and third, Pettis turned the tables. He scored five takedowns over the final 10 minutes. Pettis threatened to slap on a rear-naked choke at the end of second, but beyond that, he didn't do much damage.
Pettis controlled the pace of the fight enough to win in judges' eyes. On the feet, it was a wash with Pettis outlanding Stephens 65-61.
