Breaking down the title picture for UFC?s 185 and 205 lb. divisions

Breaking down the title picture for UFC?s 185 and 205 lb. divisions

CHICAGO -- UFC on Fox 2 will feature two fights that will decide the next contender for a championship belt, the UFC announced today during a press conference to promote the Jan. 28th event in Chicago.

At light heavyweight, former champ Rashad Evans will take on Phil Davis in the five-round main event. Evans has been promised the title fight before, but injuries and timing problems have kept him from facing nemesis Jon Jones for the UFC belt.

The next middleweight contender will be Chael Sonnen or Mark Munoz, who will fight in a three-round, co-main event. Sonnen already has had a shot at the title, but was tapped out by Anderson Silva. He called out Silva after Sonnen beat Brian Stann at UFC 136, but Silva's shoulder injury will keep him from fighting until June. According to UFC president Dana White, Sonnen did not want to wait for a fight, and the match-up with Munoz made perfect sense.

Dan Henderson, who recently beat Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in one of the best MMA bouts in a decade, was hoping for the next title shot at either middleweight or light heavyweight, but he will apparently have to wait to see how these fights shake out.

LAS VEGAS - John Dodson fed off the hate, and he had a feast.

With next season, Bellator makes move to Friday nights

With next season, Bellator makes move to Friday nightsBellator Fighting Championships, the tournament-based promotion, is moving their broadcast from Saturdays to Fridays for their next season, which is expected to start in March. Instead of competing with UFC pay-per-view and Fox events, which normally air on Saturdays, Bellator will now go up against "The Ultimate Fighter," and promotions such as MFC and XFC, which usually air on HDNet, and possibly Showtime airings of Strikeforce: Challengers and M-1 Global bouts.

USA Today spoke to Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney about the change:

"We didn't really dig into the analysis and try to assess who was one, who was two and who was three, or what we were trying to avoid the most," he said. "It just kind of came down to an analysis of, is there a night where all the factors made it to where we can maximize live-event attendance, where we can reach the largest audience from an television perspective, to give MMA fans an opportunity to really make a night for themselves with Bellator."

Bellator will move to Spike, the UFC's cable TV home until Saturday, in 2013, but the 2012 season will continue to air on MTV2. The upcoming season will feature fights between welterweight champ Ben Askren and Douglas Lima, Hector Lombard and Alexander Shlemenko's rematch, plus welterweight and bantamweight titles.

The promotion has consistently put on exciting fights, but they were lost upon an MMA audience that would focus on the UFC. Michael Chandler's upset of Eddie Alvarez was one of the year's best fights, but went against UFC 139, and aired not long before Dan Henderson and Mauricio Rua's epic bout.

Friday means that Bellator will no longer battle with these events, but it's not a perfect day. Bellator will still face plenty of competition on Fridays, both from other MMA offerings and from other sports.

Will a Friday night air date make Bellator easier for you to watch? Vote in the poll and tell us in the comments or on Facebook.

UFC 139 postfight: Bonuses, company guys get wins and Faber could get Cruz plus TUF 15 coaching gig

UFC 139 postfight: Bonuses, company guys get wins and Faber could get Cruz plus TUF 15 coaching gigSAN JOSE, Calif. - It was refreshing to see three guys who've had a large part in helping to build mixed martial arts were big winners tonight at UFC 139. Urijah Faber, Stephan Bonnar and Wanderlei Silva all made it to the postfight press conference.

Faber picked up an extra $70,000 Submission of the Night while Silva's explosive tilt against Cung Le got one of the two Fight of Night awards handed out by UFC president Dana White. Dan Henderson and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua also got $70,000 for FON.

- The event drew 13,173 and a live gate of $1.268 million.

- Faber took out Brian Bowles less than six and half minutes to seal the deal on another title shot against UFC bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz. White confirmed that Faber is getting Cruz next, but that the champ is sidelined for a while with his latest hand surgery.

"We've got some ideas we were getting together tonight and talking about," White said. "We've got to talk to Urijah and Cruz first. Cruz just had hand surgery, so he's out for a little bit, but we have an idea. We have a plan."

When Faber made the suggestion that he and Cruz could be the coaches for Season 15 of "Ultimate Fighter," White raised his eyebrows as if to confirm that the pair have been discussed as possible candidates.

- Speaking of champs on the mend, Anderson Silva is working through shoulder issues. When a Brazilian reporter pressed White on reports that the promotion is headed to Sao Paolo, Brazil next June, he seemed shocked and wondered aloud how the news leaked. White didn't confirm or deny the report. When asked a followup question during his media scrum following the presser, White said it's very possible Silva could be held out until June.

- It's official that the UFC on Fox 2 will be in Chicago. White said the show will be two hours long and feature four fights. He would not elaborate on any of the candidates to fill the four main card fights at the United Center.

- UFC 139 Knockout of the Night went to 20-year-old Michael McDonald, who devastated UFC newcomer Alex Soto in just 56 seconds.

It's been quite a year for McDonald. He's 3-0 in 2011. Tonight, he likely made $7,000 to show and $7,000 to win. UFC 139's payday totals $84,000 for McDonald. He made $12,00 at UFC 132 and also won a fight of the Night bonus at Ultimate Fight Night 24 in March good for a total payday of $70,000. The Modesto-native has earned $166,000 this year.

WWE SmackDown! Taping Draws 1,600 Paying Customers

Last Tuesday’s SmackDown! taping in Toledo, Ohio was one of the worst attended WWE events in years as it drew 3,200 fans, with only 1,600 paid.

Jason Miller cornered tonight by Kevin James, Michael Bisping says it?s all part of what makes ?Mayhem? less than legit contender

Jason Miller has a lot to prove to UFC fans tonight at the Season 14 "Ultimate Fighter Finale."

He's built a nice following amongst hardcore MMA fans by augmenting his fight career with satellite radio and television shows, but his opponent says Miller's standing in the MMA world is built on a myth.

"While I've been in the UFC fighting the best fighters in the world, he's been flying around the world fighting a bunch of washed-up journeymen and not doing a very good job of it," Bisping told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "The only reason he's here now and the only reason he got "The Ultimate Fighter" spot is because he's a loudmouth TV personality."

Miller (24-7, 0-1 UFC) laughs at that assertion. He's a highly sought after teacher of the sport in southern California. Even with all of his side gigs, he still has his eyes on the fighting prize.

"It's paramount. That's what kicked off all this other stuff," Miller said. "I wouldn't have a radio career or a television career without fighting. The past year, I really put in the effort into doing the things in the gym that are going to help my fight career."

Miller will flash a little of that entertainment-world star power with "King of Queen" stars Kevin James in his corner. The 30-year-old Miller met James during the filming of MMA-themed film "Here's Comes the Boom."

Below is James speaking about the UFC-approved film.

Falling behind in line: Jon Fitch has no clue why his GSP rematch hasn?t come yet

Nick Diaz will get his shot, then it looks like Carlos Condit and Jake Ellenberger are in the running for a fight against Georges St-Pierre. Where's the guy who's 13-1-1 in the UFC at 170 pounds?

Jon Fitch is still wondering why he seems to be on the outside looking in when it comes to a title fight against the welterweight champ.

"It's confusing and I try not to think about it because I just want to focus on my fight and be able train again," Fitch told ESPN1100/98.9 FM in Las Vegas.

When pressed further by Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole, Fitch unloaded.

"It is frustrating because the truth of the matter is, I don't understand what the problem is. No one's come up to me and said 'we don't like what you're doing. Do this differently.' I've gotten absolutely zero feedback about what's going on," Fitch said. "I have no idea what's happening or why certain guys are getting title shots. It's a complete mystery to me and no one's approached me and said anything about my style or what I'm doing good or bad."

More than a few fans have turned against Fitch and his methodical style. On Fitch's Wikipedia page, one even went as far as labeling him "Decision [expletive]."

"I don't know who these people are (calling me boring). It's a mystery. I've never met one of these people ever in my life. I've never been told that by anyone in the UFC. I've never been told that by anyone I've ever met in any of my signings. I don't understand where it's coming from either," said Fitch.

An dominant victory win, could change everything. Fitch, who's strung together five straight decision wins and draw since his UFC 87 loss against GSP, faces the very tough Johny Hendricks. With Hendricks' developing striking game backed by a college wrestling background that includes two NCAA national titles, Fitch will score major points if he can finish his opponent at UFC 141.

Ben Henderson wants to be synonymous with the lightweight division, but 170 lb. move may be in future

UFC Lightweight Title challenger Ben Henderson is singularly focused on becoming the best fighter in the lightweight division. But that doesn't mean 155 lbs. will be his home forever. In an interview with MMAWeekly.com, Henderson said he'll eventually tire of the weight cut and pursue a run at welterweight:

155 is my weight class and I'm going to own it. I want 55 to be synonymous with myself, I want to be synonymous with the 55-pound weight class, but that being said, the older you are the harder it is to cut weight. I'm getting a little bit older now and cutting weight sucks... There's a few guys who've said things pretty similar as far as cutting weight when you get older, how hard it is. Dan [Henderson] is a perfect example. He's wrestled forever. I wrestled and cut weight six months, seven months out of the year since I was 12 years old. It's kind of getting old. I don't like it so much anymore... It is hard on the body. People don't realize how much of a factor it is."

Frankie Edgar doesn?t want to make a habit of comeback wins

Frankie Edgar doesn?t want to make a habit of comeback wins

The UFC headed to Japan today to formally announce their Feb. 24 event. Frankie Edgar will put his belt on the line against Benson Henderson. In his past two title defenses, Edgar had to come back from a severe beating early on by Gray Maynard. He came back to earn a draw and a fourth-round knockout, but it's not how Edgar wants every fight to go.

"I'm not trying to make a habit of it," he said. "The punishment I've been taken in the past couple fights, it's like a cat has nine lives. I've used eight lives to get out of that first round. It does make for exciting TV, and it's definitely building my legend, so as long as I come out the victor, I'll get beat up four or five rounds. As long as I come out the victor, I'll do it every time."

That won't be an easy feat against Henderson, who won fights over Clay Guida, Jim Miller and Mark Bocek to earn the chance to fight for the belt. In every bout, Henderson has shown an ability to both deliver a beating and outlast his opponents. Henderson's cardio is one of his strengths. As the one-time WEC champ, Henderson has been in five-round fights before.

How do you think their bout will go? Tell us in the comments or on Facebook.

Ryan Bader gets much-needed win by KO at UFC 139

Ryan Bader needed a big win to get back on track, and that's exactly what he got at UFC 139. He knocked out Jason Brilz in just ... in San Jose on Saturday night.

Bader landed a powerful right 1:17 into the first round, and Brilz fell straight to the ground. The punch landed behind Brilz's ear, making it a similar knockout as Junior dos Santos used to win the heavyweight championship last week.

"I put a lot of pressure on myself," Bader said after the fight. "I trained hard and I trained with the best. I had great coaches and we worked hard and I think it showed out there tonight. I felt comfortable. I really felt everything came together for me and I pulled out the win."

This win gives Bader a good ending to a disastrous 2011. He started the year as a possible title contender at light heavyweight, but was submitted with a guillotine by Jon Jones in a title eliminator in February. In July, Tito Ortiz beat him with a guillotine. Bader had to pull out a win, and that's exactly what he did. He is now 13-2, while Brilz is 18-5-1.

FLASHBACK (5 YRS. AGO): ENNIS - Why I don't want Matt Hughes to retire just yet

Staff06Ennis150_1.jpg
[Note: This article was originally published five years ago on MMATorch.com. In this article, current MMATorch Senior Columnist Shawn Ennis made his case for why Matt Hughes shouldn't retire just yet. In retrospect, did Hughes make the right decision to fight at least another five years? Read this article to help make up your mind. Did Hughes accomplish what Shawn thought he should and could in the subsequent five years?]

BY SHAWN ENNIS, MMATORCH SENIOR COLUMNIST

Matt Hughes is the most dominant champion in the history of the UFC, and perhaps in the relatively short history of the sport of mixed martial arts. His recently-avenged loss to BJ Penn in 2004 is the only loss he has suffered in over five years. He has taken on and beaten all comers. Certainly the champ has nothing left to prove. So why did it trouble me so much when I read on Sherdog.com that Hughes was planning on hanging up the gloves after his current contract with the UFC expires? He doesn?t need to convince me that he?s the best, because I know it. So why shouldn?t he be allowed to go out on top?

See, here?s my problem. I?m a selfish guy, and when Hughes retires, I don?t want there to be any "what if?" questions lingering. In the realm of sports in general and contact sports in particular, one can rarely speak in absolutes. But Hughes has a chance to be one of the few guys to be universally considered unbeatable when he decides to retire, and it would take more than the two fights he has left on his contract. Not much more, mind you, but a little.

First, he?s obviously got to stop the unstoppable force that is the phenomenal Georges St. Pierre on Saturday night. GSP is the consensus number one contender, and he could render this column moot with a victory in six days, but I?ll leave that point alone for the moment. With a victory over the Canadian this weekend, Hughes can answer the first question, being whether he can best a more experienced and confident St. Pierre than the man he faced two years ago. Should this happen, Hughes will have one fight left on his contract, and the next opponent for the welterweight champion was decided this past Saturday as Matt Serra squeaked by Chris Lytle in the Ultimate Fighter 4 Finale.

In my humble opinion, a victory over the tough Serra would be a formality. "The Terror" is by no means a pushover, but Hughes is just too strong and too good for the jiu-jitsu master to beat on the ground or on the feet. Serra would be better suited to return to the lightweight division, as I don?t think he stands a chance, as good as he is, against the top four or five welterweights in the UFC. So should the report be true that Hughes plans to retire after he fights out the remainder of his contract, he would end with a victory over Matt Serra. Quality opponent though Serra may be, I don?t think he?s the caliber of opponent suitable to be the last fighter faced by the most dominant welterweight the sport has ever seen. So then what should Hughes do should he get past both St. Pierre and Serra to retain his long-held welterweight crown? I?d like to see him take two more fights.

The first opponent I?d like to see Hughes face is the cocky, undefeated Diego Sanchez, should Sanchez still be undefeated. I don?t see Joe Riggs taking "Nightmare" out in December, and if it weren?t for the TUF 4 winner Serra getting an automatic title shot, Sanchez would likely be the next in line. So in all likelihood Sanchez would have to win two more fights before fighting for the gold. Now, I?m not saying that Hughes needs to prove himself against a fighter as young and relatively inexperienced as Sanchez. But it?s one of those "what if?" things. It?s not that big of a stretch to think that Sanchez could possibly hold the gold when the smoke clears if Hughes were to vacate the premises. So imagine that you?ve got Sanchez as your champion?a guy who never faced the indomitable retired champ, but who makes no bones about the fact that he would have soundly beaten Hughes if the former champ was still around. Do you want to have to wonder whether Sanchez could actually have beaten Hughes? I don?t. I told you, I'm selfish. I want that question answered before Hughes steps down. And if Diego were to join the host of others through whom the champ has plowed on his path to MMA immortality, there would be only one question left to answer in the welterweight division, and it would be a question to be asked for the third time.

B.J. Penn. Yes, Hughes already beat him. Yes, Penn is reportedly moving back down to 155 pounds. There's no question in many peoples' mind that Hughes could beat Penn again given the chance. And yet the question marks linger like the tickle in the back of my throat that drives me nuts. If Penn goes on a tear in the lightweight division and builds some momentum, are you telling me you don't want to see a rubber match? Penn's cardio was called into question initially after the last fight (I was also one who wondered how Penn could gas under those circumstances), but with the recent confirmation of a painful injury suffered by "The Prodigy" while trying to apply a fight-ending submission hold at the end of the second round, I wonder what would have happened if a healthy Penn had answered the bell in the third round. I'm not trying to take anything away from Hughes' victory, mind you. A lesser fighter would have been caught in the triangle/armbar applied by Penn and not been able to attempt the escape and ride out the round. Hughes did it, then came back completely fresh for round three and took Penn apart. Of his victory there is no question. But the last part in a trilogy between these two fighters could be one for the ages.

The question remains whether Hughes actually plans to retire after his contract is over, and if you believe what he said during the show on Saturday night, he's still got some fight left in him. That could mean a lot of things, but I hope it means that we'll see Hughes around for at least another year. I'm not going to begrudge the guy for wanting to spend more time with his family. It's just me being selfish. I want to see what Hughes can continue to do. Add to what I've already talked about the rogue's gallery of up and coming potential contenders in the welterweight division, and the possibility that Hughes is toying with moving up to middleweight to attempt to hold two titles in two weight classes at the same time, and there's enough to keep the champ busy for many events to come. But that's all future talk. For now, I just want to see a few more fights.

Early estimates have UFC 139 garnering around 270,000 pay-per-view buys

Dave Meltzer has early estimates on buys for last weekend's UFC 139 pay-per-view event in San Jose in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer newsletter (Subscription required at WrestlingObserver.com), and the trend of sub-300K buys continues. Early estimates for the card have it a little under 270,000, though more accurate numbers won't be available for a couple of weeks.

That estimate puts it slightly behind UFC 137, but above UFC 136 from October. Considering the rash of recent events, the attention drawn away from this card by the Fox event and no title fight on the event, the number is actually not bad. It's still a down year for the UFC from a buyrate standpoint, and they've got their work cut out for them to turn things around on that front in 2012.

UFC 139's Danny Castillo details weigh-in drama preceding win over Shamar Bailey

The serious look on Danny Castillo's face after he pounded out Shamar Bailey did not suggest a man happy with his work, and his initial attempts to explain his win to UFC commentator Joe Rogan were comically understated.

Instead of gushing over his training partners or the virtue of hard work following his win in UFC 139's first preliminary bout, Castillo used his post-fight speech to chastise Bailey for missing weight by two pounds, even though he benefited from it financially.

Castillo nevertheless felt it was a disrespectful gesture, and the mini-drama building up to the fight fed his rebuke.

UFC 139 openers: Irked Castillo rolls over Bailey for first round TKO, Torres and Baczynski win too

UFC 139 openers: Irked Castillo rolls over Bailey for first round TKO, Torres and Baczynski win too

SAN JOSE - Apparently Danny Castillo felt disrespected when Shamar Bailey missed weight yesterday. After pounding on Bailey to produce a first TKO victory, Castillo had little to say except that his opponent bothered him with his weight issues.

"You're supposed to be a professional and come in three pounds overweight, and then tell me you can't lose anymore weight?" Castillo told UFC analyst Joe Rogan.

Bailey came in yesterday at 158 pounds and passed on trying to lose two pounds in the next hour. In the end, the extra weight made no difference as Castillo threw him around like a rag doll in fight No. 1 of UFC 139 at the HP Pavilion.

The northern California-native scored his first takedown just 15 seconds into the fight. Castillo (12-4, 2-1 UFC) landed a nasty body kick and fell to his rear end from the impact. Bailey charged forward to score his own takedown and got double-legged down to the mat. He got up quickly, but Castillo picked him up off the ground and slammed him down twice in the next 45 seconds. After the third takedown, Bailey never got back to his feet.

Castillo worked from half guard to smother and grind on Bailey. It wore out the Season 13 "Ultimate Fighter" alum. In the final 90 seconds of the round, Castillo began to sit up on a knee and punch away to the body and head. Bailey got tired of defending himself with 15 seconds left in the round as Castillo threw 11 unanswered shots. Bailey rolled to his side and covered up. Most of the shots were hitting Bailey on the arm, but it was clear he didn't want to continue at the 4:52 mark of the first.

"I feel great. It feels good when you fight to your potential. It's exciting for me and important for the advancement of my career. I think the lightweight division is the strongest in the UFC and it's good to get a win. It's what I wanted to do and I'm glad I went out there and did it," said Castillo.

Bailey, who is now 1-2 in the UFC, admitted he blew it this weekend.

"I'm very disappointed in myself, definitely underperformed. I've never come in overweight, so it was definitely a bad start with that. Then Danny went out and fought a good fight. I wish the ref hadn't stopped the fight but what are you going to do. I need to do what I do, but way better," said Bailey (12-5).

Torres workman-like in getting back on winning track

Miguel Torres isn't the same fighter he was in the WEC, but that doesn't mean he's doing anything wrong.

Now that the weight class is quickly filling up with dangerous opponents, the former bantamweight king is simply using a more measured approach. Torres worked the clinch effectively and wore down Nick Pace to pick up his first win since February via unanimous decision, 30-27 on all three scorecards.

"I'm a little disappointed with my performance, I wanted to knock him out or submit him. I knew he was looking for a good shot. I could tell by the way he was standing. I didn't want to rush it, so I was trying to be smart," Torres (39-4, 2-1 UFC) said. "I've been working on my wrestling a lot. So I was trying a couple takedowns and get up and put the pressure on him. I felt him in the clench and he was kind of weak, so I was able to finish it."

Baczynski pulls the upset in rather easy fashion over Brown

Matt Brown's been around the block a time or two, but the veteran does tend to have lapses in concentration. It happened tonight and Seth Baczysnki was the beneficiary.

Baczysnki, a cast member on Season 11 of "The Ultimate Fighter," slapped on a tight guillotine choke early in the second. Brown tried to free himself, but after 24 seconds he couldn't hold out any longer and tapped at 0:42.

"I'm just really pleased to get out of there with the finish. It's my 15th professional win andI'm happy to close the win out against a tough opponent," Baczynski said. "I'm going to get to enjoy Thanksgiving with my family this year and be thankful for my success."

Brown (12-11, 5-5 UFC) didn't look right from the start. He was tentative in the striking game and often pushed around in the clinch in the opening five minutes.

Baczynski (15-6, 2-1 UFC) came out looking to throw in the second. He missed with a big shot that Brown ducked under. Brown pushed forward to score takedown, but left his head exposed. It was a pretty easy submission attempt for Baczysnki.

Brown was a minus-135 betting favorite.
