With pay-per-view cards costing viewers $54.95 per event (for HD broadcasts), it can be costly to keep up with every fight, and some cards wind up feeling less worth the money than others.
However, the organization has moved to bring even more free fights to their fans, making every single fight available on their cards for three events so far, in a move that appears to be a permanent plan.
When you look at what the UFC is giving fans throughout the year, the monthly pay-per-view bill doesn't seem as much of a drawback considering what fans are receiving for their money through the year. If you couple in the ability to split the cost with a group of friends or the option to go to a bar for events, it's really remarkable just what the UFC is going to provide for fans in the coming year.
The UFC will run between 14 and 16 pay-per-view events this year, with another 10 or 11 fully free cards on Spike TV or Versus (not including Strikeforce cards). If we assume 25 events run, with 15 pay-per-view events and 10 free cards, the UFC will have 75 fights that will be guaranteed to air live on pay-per-view.
Now, paying for each pay-per-view event on your own would set you back $825 for a year, averaging out to $11 per pay-per-view fight. That might seem like a lot, but you're getting more than that for your money when you add in the other fights they're making available for you to see.
Each event averages 11 fights per card. If we assume here that the UFC will continue to air every fight in some capacity, be it Facebook, YouTube, Spike TV, Ion Television or something we haven't seen yet, that brings 90 fights available just on the pay-per-view cards for free - or more than what you're paying for as it is.
Bringing those fights into the fray, it brings the price down per fight to just $5 a fight. But we're not done yet.
There are still 110 more fights the organization will make available throughout the year from their free broadcasted events on their various networks. That brings the total amount of fights available to 275 for a one year period (with this conservative guess on the amount of events).
If you're paying for each pay-per-view event by yourself, that means throughout the year you're essentially paying the UFC $3 per fight that they put on. If you go to a bar for a few events, or split the cost with friends, that number comes down substantially.
So while the price for some events may seem exorbitant for what's on the card as compared to others, the UFC is trying to make up for it by making all of these other fights available to offset that and make it worth it throughout the year. At the end of the day I think they're doing a fantastic job of that, and they're going to find even more ways to innovate the way fans experience these cards in the future, which will make it even more worth while.
And if you still think the pay-per-view price isn't worth it, or you don't want to go to a bar to watch the fights and don't have anyone to split the price with you, that's alright as well. They're not asking everyone to buy every single card. They know some fights are more intriguing than others, but they're at least making an effort to pay fans back for their patronage with a massive amount of fights available overall.
